Do you know how to interpret the weather to know if you can go sailing or not?

Do you know how to interpret the weather to know if you can go sailing or not?

You have to keep in mind that the weather is unpredictable and even if you have looked at the weather a hundred times, it can change in a matter of seconds.

To avoid surprises and ensure maximum safety of people on board, it never hurts to know how to interpret the evolution of the sky and the sea. It can certainly help us to anticipate weather conditions not quite favourable for sailing.

Both fishermen and marine insurance experts place the sun as one of the key elements to observe. So, let’s begin to know how to interpret the sun.

THE SUN
If at dawn it seems bright, but without glare and there are no clouds, it is a sign of good weather. In case that it seems to us that the sun is large, possibly during the day there will be light breezes. But if at sunset we see it somewhat smaller than usual, strong winds may originate.
The soft orange and greyish blue tones during sunset are a sign of good weather during the night. On the other hand, bad weather will also appear if the sun shows red at sunrise or sunset -sign of strong winds- or if at dawn it disappears between the clouds of the horizon creating effects of crepuscular rays.

THE MOON
If it is clear, the day of the next day will be favourable for navigation. But when it turns red on the horizon it is a sign of strong winds in the next few hours. In this case, expert sailors and boat insurance professionals recommend extreme caution on board.

THE WIND
If the wind coming from the northeast does not circulate to the south and there are no rains, we will most likely have a few days of good weather. On the other hand, if the wind comes from the west or from the southwest towards the south, in addition to cooling, then surely both rains and strong winds are expected.

THE CLOUDS
If there are mists throughout the morning on the high coasts of the coastal mountains, we must be alert as it is indicative of bad weather. The same happens if white clouds have a much darker base.

THE STARS
If they look bright, the day will probably be good and peaceful. But if they do it in an excessive way, it is necessary to be cautious since it is a sign that changes in weather conditions can change.

Once the meteorological phenomena have been explained, we hope that going sailing will be much safer and more accurate in terms of time.
